I do not provide couple counseling at this time.

The only insurance I am in-network with is Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO. However, please call the number on the back of your card to ensure that I am on your plan and whether you have a deductible or a copay. Do not assume anything with insurance - always double check. If it ends up that I am not on your plan, you will be responsible for paying for the full price of the session.

I am considered an out-of-network provider for all other insurance companies. This means you pay at the time of the appointment and I provide you with the a monthly receipt for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. If you are considering using your insurance, I encourage you to contact your insurance company to inquire about your coverage (e.g. do I have mental health coverage; what is my deductible; how many sessions are covered; what coverage is available for in-network and out-of-network providers). Please note I will not have any contact with your insurance company.

I do encourage you to be aware of the pros and cons of using insurance. I think it is important to be educated on the risks and benefits of using insurance to cover your therapy sessions.

  • Insurance companies require a mental health diagnosis in order to pay for the client’s sessions.

  • That diagnosis will remain on the client’s permanent health record. This a diagnosis will follow the client in school, military, landing federal jobs, security clearance, applying for life insurance, etc.

  • Insurance companies can request the client’s session notes at any point in time (by using your insurance you waive confidentiality) and many clients feel uncomfortable with this.

  • Insurance companies decide what type of treatment they will cover, what type of treatment they will not.  Example: Many companies will not cover couples counseling, or will not cover specific diagnosis.

  • Insurance companies can limit the number of sessions that a client can have.

  • You are limited to the therapists who are contracted with your specific insurance.

  • The benefits of using insurance is the coverage can make therapy more affordable for more individuals to participate

Many people choice to bypass insurance and pay out-of-pocket in order to:

  • Have increased privacy and confidentiality. Notes are kept with the minimal amount of information as no claim is being filed.

  • Greater freedom to choose the therapist that is the best fit for them.

  • Client and therapist are able to make the decisions about length, format and nature of the treatment rather than insurance company.
